University of Rochester Rush Rhees Library

The design challenge for the Rush Rhees Library was to integrate today’s information technology into the early 1900s container that is located at the head of the main quad of the University of Rochester.

The ceremonial face of the Library is to the students on the quad; however, the vehicular age has re-oriented the main access to the Library to the “back side” of the quad.  Gardner PLUS was engaged to study alternative approaches to address a number of disparate goals:  enhance pedestrian connections (tunnels and above grade) in that area of the campus; improve bus and auto traffic patterns; upgrade the rear of the Library to become the main entrance; and plan for future upgrades to the Library brought on by information technology changes.

The result of the Gardner PLUS study was the creation of a Master Plan for the area of campus around the Library.  The Master Plan generated presentation graphics and renderings for fundraising purposes.
