Rochester Institute of Technology Global Village
The Gardner PLUS team with a very talented and committed team of consultants worked together as proactive partners with RIT to provide design through construction services for the interior spaces of its newest addition to the RIT campus, Global Village. Global Village, a 214,000 SF village-inspired element of the campus, includes an academic support wing, a restaurant with a margarita bar, a market, copy shop, post office, wellness center, hair salon, as well as other support spaces.
Our firm’s goal was to design the retail fit-out spaces of this new addition to the RIT campus in keeping with the highest standard of design and functionality previously set in the original campus. Each retail area was designed to incorporate a global theme—South America, Africa, Asia, Europe—and by incorporating key architectural components, these spaces visually transport users to other parts of the world.
One of the many unique challenges of designing this multi-cultural space was incorporating the RIT objective that all new buildings on their campus would meet the minimum standards of the US Green Building Council’s LEED Silver designation. This was accomplished at Global village by the use of innovative water saving technology, energy saving motion sensors, recycled content materials, increased day-lighting to interior spaces and other components of the USGBC LEED Silver criteria.
